I know less than nothing about the SS5, but that error looks like the installer can't mount a root partition. Normally while doing the install the root partition is a ramdisk or possibly a compressed filesystem on the CD. I suspect the testing CD for sparc is not well tested for an error like this to appear. Now - your reason for requiring the testing variant is flawed. There is absolutely no reason for not installing stable, then either apt-get a newer kernel, or even roll-your-own kernel from www.kernel.org (I almost always compile a new kernel for any machine I'm working with... Apart from the 486 which I simply couldn't be bothered waiting forCompiling kernels is relatively easy too given that the distro kernels have a config file you can copy.) If you need help please ask. -----Original Message----- From: suns-at-home-admin <at> net-kitchen.com [mailto:suns-at-home-admin <at> net-kitchen.com] On Behalf Of Ozz Sent: Sunday, 1 August 2004 1:06 p.m. To: suns-at-home <at> net-kitchen.com Subject: [Suns-at-Home] Debian Testing on Sun SPARCstation 5 Hi Guys. Hi Guys.
I'm trying to install Debian Testing on my SS5. The reason for
installing testing is that I need at least the 2.4.21 kernel for certain
apps.
When I boot the Debian CD I get the following error:
Freeing unused kernel memory: 132k freed
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4203, limit=4096
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4204, limit=4096
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4205, limit=4096
attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want=4206, limit=4096
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. Press L1-A
to return to the boot prom
The iso was created by jigdo from the 2004-06-26 build.
Jigdo verified the checksum OK.
I also tried several different CD burns, all with the same error.
Any ideas?

Ozz.
