I haven't dealt with extended EXT2/3 partitions unless I'm using qemu
to access them. OTOH, I suspect part of my problem has
been 2048 byte block FAT32 partitions which have been giving me
grief.  This has been an insightful discussion so far.  I just never
knew enough about FAT32 to know why it didn't work, but just
that at one point it did, and then later it did not.  I
