patching s10 with zones and zfs

I'm in doubt. I have a whole lot of patches to comply to sol10 U7 but I want to do this *SAFE* Do I create snapshots to fall back to (if the upgrade fails)? -OR- do I create a new BE? But how do I patch that one? Boot into it and patch? Or patch from the running BE, luactivate it and boot into the new patched environment.
