My method for labels is pencil on one side and a label maker label on the other. If the plant came with a label I bury that one. If not a make one in pencil to bury.

all those who said a plain pencil marker are getting an A+ from me on this course.

sometimes you can cut gallon milk containers into strips for the labels, if one surface is rough enough to take pencil. a china marking grease pencil will also work, but i hate them so much, i cannot bear to use them for ANYTHING.
