{i} Documentary Film Festival on May 5

Visthar invites you to a Documentary Film Festival celebrating peoples’ struggles for Justice and
Peace on May 5 in Bangalore. Held at the green, environmentally friendly Visthar campus, the festival
screens documentaries from around the country on urgent, contemporary issues. For directions to the

10:30 Just One Earth (5 mins)
Just One Earth is a beautiful music video created by David Bernz, in the wake of the Fukushima accident. This
festival curtain-raiser captures the spirit of the Bhoomi Habba in 5 minutes.
 
10:35 Bhopali (84 mins)
Bhopali is a new feature documentary about the survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster, the
1984 gas leak in Bhopal. Today the suffering continues, prompting victims to fight for justice against
Dow Chemicals, the American corporation responsible for the disaster.
 
12:00 Mercury in the Mist (16 mins)
Reminding us that “We All Live in Bhopal”, the Tamil documentary-maker Amudhan follows the
destruction of the environment and the plight of the workers from mercury poisoning at a Hindustan
Unilever Plant in Kodaikanal.
 
12:15 Mission Oxygen (4 mins)
This short film rounds off the festival’s selection on industrial air pollution. Produced by students
from the Vijaya Vittala Institute of Technology, the film looks at the world we are leaving for our children.
 
12:20 Radiation Stories: Koodankulam (84 mins)
When the mainstream media muffles the voices from the ongoing people’s struggle in Koodankulam,
Amudhan breaks the silence and takes us to the villages at the center of the resistance. Completed just
before Section 144 was enforced in the area, the film presents rare footage from the protests.
 
2:10 Agent Orange 30 Years Later (30 mins)
Agent Orange is a neurotoxin used by the U.S. military in the Vietnam War. The chemical was produced by Dow
Chemicals, Monsanto and others. The film weaves compelling interviews with footage from the archives to
tell the story of those affected by Agent Orange thirty years later.
 
3:15 Jaduguda Black Magic (16 mins)
The Adivasis living near the Uranium mines in Jaduguda, Jharkand have borne the brunt of India’s nuclear
ambitions. Their story, ignored by the mainstream media, is the focus of this film by activist-director Shriprakash.
 
3:30 Radiation Stories: Kalpakkam (26 mins)
The last film of the festival again breaches the wall of media silence, this time around the Kalpakkam
nuclear facilities. Amudhan shines the light on the conditions of villagers affected by the nuclear
facility 60 kms from Chennai.

The Documentary Film Festival will be accompanied by an International Food Festival, Poster
Exhibitions, Dolls Exhibition, Art Workshops for Children, Music, Dance and Theatre. There is no
entrance fee.
