The participants had a great weekend and enjoyed to ride these well organized races on a really beautiful track. The race competitors were very close to each other this year and had a tough but very sportive fight for the prices. It took real long before the leading groups of sometimes more than 15 riders were torn in to smaller groups. This year rowingbike designer Derk Thijs just managed to stay ahead of the competition. Second place was claimed by Sander Gerdes. Sander is a boat member with Olympic golden medal rower Nico Rienks so it is quite clear this is a fast rower. Especially in the one hour time trial and the sprint Gerdes performed well with a 3rd and 2nd place. Martijn Mateman, European Rowingbike Champion 2007, had to settle for a 3rd place this year. Martijn showed his excellence in the hour time trial by leaving everybody far behind. It was only by a better end sprint in the criterion and long distance race that Thijs could take the lead in the overall ranking of the event. Recumbent bike champion Ymte Sijbrandij, who just as Thijs won these rowingbike championships for 3 times in earlier years, ended on a 4th place. Sijbrandij showed his specialty again; he leaded incredible furious sprints in the very beginning of criterion and long distance race. The quality of this years participants did not allow Ymte to pull enormous gaps between participants in the leading pack. Ymte was not in superb shape this raceweekend; he had some problems with food and fuel; something you really need for these long intensive races. Former rugby international Arno Seijbel took the 5th place. Arno drove very well again but got some bad luck with his spd cleats in the criterion; this has cost him precious points. Besides the tension and the sportive violence in the head of the pack these yearly championships are a sportive meeting point of top and recreational sports- man and -women of different backgrounds. Certainly rowers and recumbent bike riders but also riders with a history in rugby and windsurfing participate and have fun together. The atmosphere between this colorful bunch is excellent. Young and old meet; youngest participant is 16 years; the oldest one in his seventies... A spectacular site where the 2 back to back tandems that participated. The "mixed" tandem of Theo and Annemieke Homan took a 12th place in the overall ranking; a very good result! Young Johanna Aarnoutse was the fastest lady amongst the total of 6 ladies participating (besides the tandem) Derk Van Limbergen also made an interesting achievement: Derk is driving with only only one leg and he still managed to get a 41st place in the ranking. The rowingbike is very well suited for use for people with certain leg handicaps as back, belly, arm & shoulder muscles are used. There was one more participant, Pieter Stoter, riding a rowingbike the same way in the tour class. These "lesser valid" sportsman are very valid on the rowingbike. All together this race weekend was filled with sportive pleasure, this asks for more on the next edition on 2009, September 12 & 13! ~end of press release~ On the photos (from left to right): Martijn Mateman, Arno Seijbel, Ymte Sijbrandij, Sander Gerdes, Ymte at the start.
