All, I am hoping to host a Human Powered Speed Challenge next July in Michigan. The event would be held at the Michigan Ford Proving Grounds in Romeo, Michigan. The main high-speed test track, 5 miles (8 km) around, as been recently repaved. It is flat, smooth asphalt and has an inside lane flat for the entire circuit. I'm hoping to have One-Hour, Six-Hour, and perhaps a 24-hour Record attempts on the track. In addition to these premier events, we would have low-altitude sprints, road races, hill climb, plus perhaps 1/4 mile drags and Straight-Line Kilometer record attempts. I have thought of devising a purely Coast-Down competition (no power input). I am also going to look into booking time in a wind tunnel for a select few vehicles. For those who have been to the local Michigan Waterford HPV rally, the Ford test track is about 15 miles (24 km) from this location. It is about a one-hour drive from the Detroit Metropolitian airport. Temperatures average about 82F (28C) in July. Humidity is ok. Wind speeds are low. The track is lined by trees. Elevation is abou 1000 feet (305 meters) Aerial View: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=42.843877,-83.070545&spn=0.060415,0.107288&t=h&z=13 I am trying to settle on dates for the event. There are three choices. My employer will have limited operations at the Proving Grounds during the week following the July 4 holiday as this is a "vacation" time or summer shut-down period. MID-WEEK EVENT: Tues, Wed, Thurs - July 7, 8, 9 My thoughts: This dates may be better for participants having to drive from the West-Coast to attend. The holiday weekend before and the weekend afterwards are available to drive back home. It would still require five days of vacation time off of work. However, it may not be welcomed by the local mid-west people used to the weekend races on the HPRA circuit. Would people object to having to take five days vacation off of work for this event? WEEKEND EVENT: Fri, Sat, Sun - July 3,4,5 holiday weekend. I learned that this is also the date of the World Championships/CycleVision in Europe. Though I learned that some riders may come to Michigan, instead of the worlds if there is a chance for world records on the new track. WEEKEND EVENT: Fri, Sat, Sun - July 10,11,12 This is the dates of the Northbrook / Kenosha HPRA event held in Chicago / Wisconsin each summer. We have already discussed moving these events to a different time frame. I am looking for input as to what is best for the participants. Please respond with any choices you have. Next week, I am meeting with the track management to try and decide on the dates. Sincerely, Michael Mowett "upright mike" 586-863-3902
