I know that there are Vancouver-based employees who work to
Winnipeg and back, but I've met quite a lot of Winnipeg crew
members on the western half of the trip. It's not my impression
that this is an odd exception.

I don't know what fraction of the crews on the Winnipeg -
Vancouver part of the trip are based in each city. Further
information welcome.

> How long would a layover be in Winnipeg for the Vancouver crews?

Arrivals of #2 in Winnipeg at 20:30 Sunday and Thursday,
departures of #1 at 12:00 Monday and Thursday. If all crews
worked round trips on a first-in, first-out basis, that would
mean arrive Sunday, leave Thursday, and arrive Thursday, leave
Monday. That would surely spark a wildcat strike by the crews.
More likely is a round trip job for the Sunday arrival with
a Monday departure, and one-way jobs for the Thursday arrival
and departure, with a deadhead by air in the other direction.

If the western crews are split roughly 50-50 between Vancouver
and Winnipeg homes, then maybe Vancouver crews will work
dep VCVR Fri -> arr WNPG Sun -> dep WNPG Mon -> arr VCVR Wed,

and Winnipeg crews will work
dep WNPG Thu -> arr VCVR Sun -> dep VCVR Tue -> arr WNPG Thu.

That would avoid any deadheading, but it's still quite a long
layover in Vancouver for the Winnipeg crew.

I know the above is idle speculation by an outsider, and may
seem totally stupid to VIA employees reading this. Please feel
free to set me straight.

I hear tell that there will be some deadheading by air of
Ocean crews after the frequency reduction. They're based in
Halifax, and now they have a same-day turnaround in Montreal:
arr 09:05, dep 18:30 the same day. Once a week there's a
next-day turnaround, from Tuesday morning arrival to Wednesday
evening departure.

With the new days of operation, there will be 9 h layover in
Montreal on Wednesday, a 33 h layover from Sat to Sun, and
two one-way jobs, one arriving in Montreal on Monday and
flying home to Halifax, and one flying into Montreal on
Friday and working the train back to Halifax. My thanks to
David Othen for this information.
