I would say that this is not an argument over anything except the meaning of 'layout'. LaTeX was never a "page layout" program, but it is still excellent for its core typesetting purposes. As far as I have seen, it remains unrivaled for typesetting math. And for simple but featureful PDF production it is hard to beat too. Indeed I would say that for these purposes it has aged almost not at all, and the TeX underpinnings perhaps even less. To each task a tool.
