non-techies
To: iitdlug <at> googlegroups.com

Hi All
I have been looking for a truly user friendly distro to suggest to
those who want to install Linux on their disks minus the gyan.
And I think I have found it - Knoppix 5.3.1!
Knoppix is the best live distro seen by me till date. The quality put
together by one man is really amazing.

It has an installer script called knoppix-installer which is to be run
from root console. Other than the default option of type
there is an option called Knoppix Cd-like (or similar). (You should
have made + formatted your root- recommended 15 GB size- and swap
partitions earlier with partition
editor or QtParted ). Rest of the options are very easy (choose
correct partition, choose to install to mbr and wait for it to copy.
Say no to floppy boot if you don't want it)
The installer installs the system to hard disk to work like from DVD.
(No CD for 5.3.1 - Its DVD only.). Shows initially 75% till all the
data gets copied (9 GB of wonderful software).
(Best part is that while its installing you can listen to songs on
other partitions or play other games including sudoku! Also you can
check that the hardware will work
before you actually install it including Compiz, audio, ethernet,
wireless etc). Once its completed reboot and remove DVD.

FOSS Contest To Encourage Students

Dear all,

During the Software Freedom Day discussion @ Delhi, there was a point that
how we can work towards further promoting/increasing penetration of Free
Software in India. There was a suggestion to start a Contest at student
level to encourage them to work on Free Software/ GNU/Linux systems.

Here are some points to start the discussion with as to how to achieve this.

* LINUX For You magazine will sponsor the contest.
* What level of students should be chosen?
* Mechanism for submission of projects?
* We can create a panel of select judges from the iLUG senior members. These
selected members will also work as mentors to the teams working on the
projects.
* Guideline for what kind of projects should students work on?
* How to engage colleges for this contest?
* Deadline for final draft of the proposed contest?

The LINUX For You magazine already organizes a FOSS India Award. In fact, a
few of the awards could be made exclusive for the students category.

Science Fiction & Foss

Dear Friends,

Today, there is as little as hair-thin difference between science fiction
and reality. Every other day, we come across studies and products which seem
to bring alive imaginations of science fiction writers. In India also
science fiction has been present in its own form. To complement science
fiction writing in India, National Council of Science and Technology
Communication in association with Indian Science Fiction Writers'
Association (ISFWA), Faizabad and Indian Association of Science Fiction
Studies (IASFS), Vallore, is organising the first-ever national discussion
on science fiction – its past, present and future. Date from 10 -14
November, 2008

I was supposed to attend the event and high-light the possibilities of FOSS
in science fiction as well as educated writers about Creative Commons, but
due to some personal issues I may not be able to attend. If there is someone
in LUG, who wants to touch upon the subject may let me know so that I can
connect him/her to the person concerned.

Regards

HowTo: access SFTP only ( exclude ssh shell )

Hi,

I had been wondering if anyone has experience with setting up a user account
for only sftp/scp access. The user is not allowed to obtain shell access
through ssh.

Infact the user should be allowed file transfer facilities only.

I found two solutions:

1. configure a user for login inside a chroot jail ( allowing ssh access )
-- the user can have shell access but inside chroot jail only

2. use rsssh ( http://www.pizzashack.org/rssh/ ) for scp/sftp only access
-- there might be some security issues as noted on the website

Can somebody through some words of wisdom for the purpose and which of the
above options should I choose?

Maybe there is some other way I can go.

Thanks in advance.

Reminder: G.I.S.S. multimedia workshop at Sarai, Sat., 11 Oct., 11am

Hi,
Just to remind people, there will be a multimedia
workshop at Sarai, CSDS, this Sat., the 11 of Oct.,
starting from 11am. This event will be more in the
nature of an informal discussion group, rather than
a formal workshop. I have updated the page at
<http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/Main/GISSMultimediaWorkshop>, and directions
to the venue
are also available there.

Some interesting technology will also be on display,
such as computer vision. The examples that Yves showed
me looked pretty neat. Please see the Wiki page for
details.

Regards,
Gora

Is it illegal to redistribute RHEL? Open Letter To Linux For You India

Dear Sirs,
Thank you all for good bad appreciating and threatening comments.I shall keep respecting all even if they
do not respect me.This happens when complex issues are debated.First they ignore you, then they ridicule
you, then they fight you, then you win.”
This is the one of the comment made  by PC Quest Reader.According to him he states as follows.

According to GPL  Redhat  cannot put any restriction on RHEL redistribution. But if redhat  put
restrictions in any distribution of GPLed softwares in aggregate , it violates the license agreement
GPL..But when REDHAT do modify Fedora which is community made and distribute it as derived version of
Fedora

 ,

you (Redhat) can't put any restrictions on redistribution that will negate any
of the conditions in FSF's definition of free software and freedoms.

PC QUEST is most admired IT magazine .It also brings every year Linux distribution. This year PCQ Linux 2008

.. PCQLinux 2008 Core was built from scratch to have a minimal
installer and installed footprint so as to be a powerful host system
for running virtual .This distribution is based on CentOS 5.1.

Freedom Walk marching strongly

Hi,

Freedom Walk is nearing its first week of the proposed 45 day
duration. More about it on freedomwalk.in

Nagarjuna says "Such campaigns can carry the social message of free
software and its
implications to the people."

Read the report on the day 5 of the walk
http://www.freedomwalk.in/content/20/freedom-walk-day-5-azhikkode-to-mulathilangady

I am sure this great effort will surely help mobile the Free Software
community across Kerala. I hope this will inspire more such efforts in
other part of the country as well.

Cheers
Praveen

Dear Mr Sandip,
I have noted down your points. Thanks for your valuable feed back. Slow and steady wins the race .I am getting
lot of responses and e-mails .I shall go on natural way of debating without fearing .Web is big information
super high way. Brickbats or Bouquets All opinions are welcome . You can post your comments .All comments
are respected .I am preparing a table in which I shall list the name of the person with his e-mail ID.I shall
list GPL point by point. Against each point I am noting Redhat favorable comments by each if any /Noting
points against redhat policy by each if any /Redhat comments on each point and compile the full table.
After making compilation I shall submit it to National Law University in Bangalore and request them to
conduct a debate in the University in public interest .I know they conduct seminars on Copyrights IP
Trademarks FOSS and GPL and Law. I shall submit my report to LUG D and Linux for you editor. They can guide me. The
debate is very important as( whether we need GPL any more or GPL is strong enough to defend internal
threats).Internal threat are greater damaging than external threats .If all companies adopt Redhat
trademark policy of RHEL and lock the Linux distribution who will contribute free code for these Locked
Linux distributions . Who does not want to make money if it easy to twist the GPL Redhat way .The dream of
Linux creater Linus Torvalds and Richard stallman of FSF will get shattered .GPL should not be allowed to
become laughing stock in front of public. Layman does not understand twisting of GPL. They only
understand four freedoms of GPL. One more view on GPL.: GPL does not restrict any one to make commercial
gains out of FLOSS.GPL only advocates that follow the GPL copyright License in letter and spirit and earn
money by consulting support and services .Any one any company can get monetary benefit consulting
support and services.Redhat can
use its trade mark for consulting support and services and training. like any other international
companies uses .RHCE certification is in most demand. As per industry reports IBM earns about 60 Billions
only on services per year..Most international Indian and Bangalore companies are making money in
millions of dollars only in consulting support and services and IT Training .They go by laws of copyright
